VR Training & Commercial Visualization for Maritime Systems

Challenge

Our client, a maritime industry technology provider, needed a dual-purpose VR solution to:
  1. Train personnel on the maintenance of a complex onboard system in a safe, repeatable, and realistic way.
  2. Visually showcase a second advanced device for marketing and sales purposes using an engaging, portable, and interactive format.
Key requirements included:
  • Realistic shipboard VR environments
  • Hand-tracking (no controllers) for natural interactions
  • Wireless deployment on Meta Quest 3 for portability and performance

Our Solution

We developed two distinct but complementary VR experiences:

1. Maintenance Training Simulation (Interactive)

An immersive VR module guiding users through step-by-step maintenance procedures in a virtual replica of the ship environment.
Features:
  • Real-time instructional guidance
  • Full hand-tracking interaction
  • Visual/audio feedback for error prevention
  • Performance summary at the end of each session
  • No equipment risk or downtime

2. Commercial Product Visualization (Exploratory)

A non-interactive but fully explorable VR scene for showcasing the second device in a cinematic and portable way.
Features:
  • High-fidelity 3D rendering of device (interior/exterior)
  • Toggle to remove protective housing
  • Full spatial exploration in virtual ship setting
  • Ideal for sales, expos, and stakeholder demos

Technical Overview

Platform Meta Quest 3 (standalone, wireless VR)
Engine Unity
Interaction Full hand-tracking (no controller dependency)
Environment Custom-built 3D shipboard scenes
Optimization Lightweight performance for smooth standalone operation

Scope of Work

We delivered both modules end-to-end, covering:
  • Instructional design & storyboarding
  • 3D model optimization from CAD
  • Realistic VR environment creation (based on ship schematics)
  • UI/UX design for intuitive use
  • Custom hand-tracking interaction logic
  • Testing, QA, and performance tuning
  • Project management & deployment support

Virtual Reality unlocks scalable, safe, and cost-effective learning and presentation experiences, especially in technical sectors like maritime, energy, and manufacturing.
Project-Specific Benefits:
  • Safety & repeatability: Train anytime, anywhere, without risk.
  • Cost reduction: No live equipment, travel, or wear-and-tear needed.
  • Better retention: Immersive simulations improve learning outcomes.
  • Product clarity: Stakeholders can “see” inside complex systems without touching them.
General Benefits:
  • Faster onboarding through experiential learning
  • Error prevention via realistic simulation
  • Global deployment without logistics
  • Reusable and updatable content
  • More compelling marketing and sales presentations

The Result

A single, powerful VR solution with dual value:
  1. Immersive training tool that boosts workforce readiness and safety
  2. Cinematic product visualization for persuasive marketing and stakeholder engagement
By combining technical accuracy with immersive design, we helped our client transform how their teams learn and how their products are experienced.
